Essential Driving Guide out of Cardiff Airport
Landing at CWL? Familiarise yourself with these vital rules of the road before exiting the airport in your rental.
Navigating the A48 & M4
Leaving CWL places you on the rural roads of Rhoose, quickly connecting to the A48. Heading east takes you into Cardiff City Centre. Alternatively, follow signs for the M4, the main motorway artery taking you west to Swansea or east towards Newport and England.
Manual vs. Automatic
Manual transmission is standard in the UK. If you are planning to navigate the notoriously steep and winding country lanes of the Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog) or Snowdonia, we strongly recommend filtering for an automatic vehicle when you book for a safer, relaxing drive.
Clean Air Zones (CAZ)
Cardiff currently does not operate a charging Clean Air Zone for private passenger cars, meaning you won't be charged for driving in the city. If you cross into England (e.g., Bristol or Bath), be aware they operate strict CAZs. Our modern CWL fleet is fully Euro 6 compliant.
Toll-Free Severn Bridges
If you plan to drive your rental car from Wales into England, there is great news: the tolls on both the Prince of Wales Bridge and the original Severn Bridge (M4 and M48) have been completely abolished. You can cross the border freely in both directions.
Driving in the Brecon Beacons
The Welsh national parks are famous for free-roaming sheep and wild ponies. Animals have right of way! The roads can be unfenced, so strictly adhere to speed limits and be highly vigilant, especially when driving around blind corners.
Returning the Car (Fuel)
If you have a 'Full-to-Full' fuel policy, there is a petrol station conveniently located on Port Road in Rhoose, just a very short distance from the airport entrance. Fill up here to avoid expensive refuelling penalty charges at the desk.
Variable Speed Limits (M4)
The M4 motorway around Newport and Cardiff frequently uses variable speed limits to control heavy commuter traffic. These are strictly enforced by average speed cameras on the overhead gantries. All speeds are in Miles Per Hour (mph).
Current UK Fuel Costs
UK fuel is sold by the litre. Prices in Wales are currently averaging around £1.45 - £1.65 per litre. We advise choosing a 'Full-to-Full' fuel policy to control your own refuelling costs when exploring the valleys.
