Glasgow Arrivals Guide

Essential Driving Guide out of Glasgow

Landing at GLA? Familiarise yourself with these vital rules of the road before exiting the Car Hire Facility in your rental.

Navigating the M8, M74 & A82

Leaving the Glasgow rental area places you right next to the M8 motorway, connecting east to Edinburgh or into the city centre. Alternatively, the A82 offers a direct, stunning route north to Loch Lomond and the Highlands. Traffic on the M8 around the city can be very heavy between 07:30-09:30.

Manual vs. Automatic

Manual transmission (stick shift) is standard in the UK. If you are jet-lagged or planning to navigate the winding single-track roads of the Scottish Highlands, we strongly recommend filtering for an automatic vehicle when you book.

Highland Driving Etiquette

If you are heading north or west, be prepared for "Single Track Roads" with passing places. You must pull over to let oncoming traffic pass, and also allow faster vehicles behind you to overtake. Never park or wait in a designated passing place.

Speed Cameras & Smart Motorways

The M8 running through Glasgow is heavily monitored by variable speed limits and average speed cameras. The A9 further north also uses average speed checks. Distances and speeds are measured in Miles Per Hour (mph).

Glasgow Clean Air Zone (LEZ)

Glasgow city centre operates a strict Low Emission Zone (LEZ). Fortunately, most of our GLA fleet comprises modern, Euro 6 compliant vehicles that meet the LEZ standards, meaning you will not face penalty charges if driving into the city centre.

Returning the Car (Fuel)

If you have a 'Full-to-Full' fuel policy, there is a BP petrol station conveniently located near the airport roundabout. Fill up here before turning into the rental return area to avoid refuelling penalty charges.

Erskine Bridge

If you are driving north to Loch Lomond, you will likely cross the Erskine Bridge over the River Clyde. Good news for international travellers: the toll on this bridge was abolished, so you can cross freely.

Current UK Fuel Costs

UK fuel is sold by the litre. Due to recent geopolitical events affecting global supply chains, prices are currently averaging around £1.45 upto £1.60 per litre. We advise choosing a 'Full-to-Full' fuel policy to control your own refuelling costs.
