Essential Driving Guide out of Liverpool
Landing at LPL? Familiarise yourself with these vital rules of the road before exiting the airport in your rental.
Navigating the A561, M62 & M56
Leaving Liverpool John Lennon Airport places you on the A561 (Speke Boulevard). Heading west takes you directly into Liverpool city centre. Heading east connects you quickly to the M62 (towards Manchester/Leeds) or south via the Runcorn bridges to the M56 (towards Chester/North Wales).
Manual vs. Automatic
Manual transmission (stick shift) is standard in the UK. If you are planning to navigate the famously winding rural roads of North Wales or the Peak District, we strongly recommend filtering for an automatic vehicle when you book for a more relaxing drive.
Mersey Gateway Toll Bridge
If you drive south towards Chester or Wales, you will likely cross the Mersey Gateway Bridge. This is a completely cashless toll. You must pay your toll online by midnight the day after your journey to avoid a heavy fine sent to your rental agency.
Clean Air Zones
Liverpool currently does not charge private passenger cars for its Clean Air Zone. However, if you are driving across to Greater Manchester or south to other major cities, be sure to check their specific LEZ/CAZ requirements. Most of our LPL fleet is Euro 6 compliant.
Speed Cameras & Smart Motorways
The M62 running east from Liverpool often acts as a "Smart Motorway". Speed limits are variable and displayed on overhead gantries to control traffic flow. These are strictly enforced by average speed cameras. Remember, all speeds are in Miles Per Hour (mph).
Returning the Car (Fuel)
If you have a 'Full-to-Full' fuel policy, there is a petrol station conveniently located on Speke Hall Avenue just before you reach the airport terminal approach. Fill up here to avoid expensive refuelling penalty charges.
Rural North Wales Driving
If you are heading into Snowdonia National Park (Eryri), be prepared for narrow, winding lanes bounded by stone walls. Always pull over into passing places to let oncoming traffic by, and be highly vigilant for cyclists, walkers, and loose sheep.
Current UK Fuel Costs
UK fuel in Merseyside is sold by the litre. Prices are currently averaging around £1.45 upto £1.60 per litre. We advise choosing a 'Full-to-Full' fuel policy to control your own refuelling costs when exploring.
