Jersey Arrivals Guide

Essential Driving Guide out of Jersey Airport

Landing at JER? Familiarise yourself with these vital, unique rules of the road before exiting the airport in your rental.

Strict 40mph Island Speed Limit

This is crucial: The absolute maximum speed limit anywhere on the island of Jersey is 40 mph. In built-up areas like St Helier, it drops to 20 or 30 mph. Speed limits are strictly enforced by the Honorary Police and speed cameras.

Navigating the 'Green Lanes'

Jersey features a network of designated 'Green Lanes' designed for walkers, cyclists, and horse riders. If you drive on a Green Lane, the maximum speed limit is 15 mph, and pedestrians/horses have absolute priority over your rental car.

The 'Filter in Turn' System

Jersey uses a unique traffic system at some junctions called Filter in Turn. It means that vehicles from each road take it in turns to merge or cross the junction, relying on courtesy and eye contact rather than traffic lights. Keep a lookout for the specific signs!

'Paycard' Parking System

Jersey does not widely use coin-operated parking meters. Instead, you must use Paycards or a parking disc (available from garages and shops) to display your arrival time. Alternatively, you can download the local PayByPhone app for digital parking payments.

Manual vs. Automatic

While manual transmission is standard, Jersey's roads are notoriously narrow, often bounded by high granite walls. You will be stopping and starting frequently for oncoming traffic. We strongly recommend an automatic vehicle and choosing a smaller economy car over a large SUV.

Driving Licences & Insurance

A standard UK, EU, or valid international driving licence is fully accepted for hiring and driving a car in Jersey. Your rental insurance covers you for the island, but generally, you cannot take the car on a ferry to France or Guernsey without explicit, prior permission from the rental desk.

Returning the Car (Fuel)

If you have a 'Full-to-Full' fuel policy, there is a petrol station conveniently located on l'Avenue de la Commune right next to the airport in St Peter. Fill up here to avoid expensive refuelling penalty charges at the desk.

Current Jersey Fuel Costs

Fuel in Jersey is sold by the litre. Due to different tax structures than the UK mainland, fuel prices can vary but are currently averaging around £1.40–£1.55 per litre. We advise choosing a 'Full-to-Full' fuel policy.
