International Visitors Guide

Essential UK Driving Guide

Visiting from the USA, Canada, Australia, South Africa, the EU, or Hong Kong? Familiarise yourself with these vital rules of the road before picking up your rental.

Driving on the Left

In the UK, all traffic drives on the left-hand side of the road. If you are accustomed to driving on the right, take a moment to adjust your mirrors and familiarize yourself with the vehicle's spatial layout before exiting the airport.

Manual vs. Automatic

Manual transmission (stick shift) is the standard across Europe and the UK. If you require an automatic vehicle, you must specifically filter and book an "Automatic". These fleets are smaller and sell out quickly, so book early!

Roundabout Etiquette

The UK has thousands of roundabouts. Traffic flows clockwise. You must always give way (yield) to traffic approaching from your right. Use your indicators to signal your exit so other drivers know your intentions.

Speed Limits & Cameras

Speed limits are strictly enforced using yellow speed cameras and average speed checks. Distances and speeds are measured in Miles Per Hour (mph). Standard limits are 30 mph in cities, 60 mph on rural roads, and 70 mph on motorways.

ULEZ & Congestion Charges

London enforces an Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) and a central Congestion Charge. While most of our rental cars are ULEZ-compliant, accessing central London incurs daily charges that you must pay online. Other cities (like Bristol and Birmingham) have similar Clean Air Zones.

Petrol vs. Diesel Pumps

Misfueling is a costly mistake. At UK petrol stations, the Green pump handle is always for Unleaded Petrol (Gasoline), and the Black pump handle is for Diesel. Always double-check the sticker on your rental car's fuel cap before filling up.

Police Traffic Stops

If signalled to stop by a police vehicle (indicated by flashing blue lights or sirens), pull over safely as soon as possible. Stay in your vehicle, turn off the engine, and wait. The officer will approach and may ask to see your driving licence, passport/ID, and car rental agreement.

Fuel Costs & Policies

UK fuel is sold by the litre (approx 3.78 litres per US gallon). Prices have gone up recently due to the Middle East crisis in Iran affecting global supply chains, currently averaging around £1.45–£1.60 per litre. We advise choosing a 'Full-to-Full' fuel policy to control your own refuelling costs.
